About the Film:

Being a farmer in todays landscape is incredibly complex and comes with many pressures and challenges. During the research and development of Breath on the Hill, we explored these realities in depth ensure we approached the subject with care, sensitivity, and respect. We also sought guidance from mental health charities and organisations, including Just Talk Agri and the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs (NFYFC), to better understand the challenges faced by those working in agriculture. Alongside these challenges, we observed  the fulfilment, purpose, and quiet joy that farming can offer. Breath on the Hill seeks to present a balanced portrait of rural life, acknowledging both its hardships and its moments of fulfilment it can bring.

Set among the rolling hills of Monmouthshire, Wales, Breath on the Hill follows Dom, a young first-generation farmer and shepherd. As someone who entered agriculture  without a family in farming background, which is a rarity within the industry, Dom had to forge his own path through determination and resilience, fulled by a genuine passion for the lifestyle. What might be considered a disadvantage instead becomes a source of motivation, strengthening his commitment to the life he has chosen.

Through Dom’s story, Breath on the Hill explores how meaning is found through labour, solitude and care combined with enduring connection between people, animals, and the  land. The film aims to reflect how each day, each breath, is shaped by the cyclical rhythms, obligations and the quiet beauty of farming.
